License Reinstatement Fee Payment — Washington

You Need to Pay the Fee but Don't Know Where to Send It

Your Washington driver license was suspended and you've completed every requirement: SR-22 proof of insurance is filed, your suspension period ended, and any court-ordered programs are finished. The final step is paying the reinstatement fee to the Washington State Department of Licensing. But the DOL offers three payment channels — online via License Express, by mail to the Olympia office, or in person at a driver licensing office — and choosing the wrong one delays your reinstatement even when your payment clears.

That amount applies to most administrative suspensions: failure to pay a traffic ticket, failure to appear in court, driving while suspended third degree, and accumulating too many violations within the state's point system. You pay once; the DOL processes the payment and updates your driving record within one to five business days depending on the channel you choose.

Paying through the wrong channel doesn't fail, it just delays: a mailed check clears in five to seven days; License Express updates your record in one.

WA Base Reinstatement Fee

Multi-tier suspensions such as DUI or reckless driving carry additional fees set by the court and the DOL.

Three Payment Channels Process at Different Speeds

The DOL accepts reinstatement fee payments through three channels. License Express — the DOL's online portal at dol.wa.gov — processes payments immediately during business hours and updates your driving record within one business day. You need your driver license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a debit or credit card. The system confirms eligibility before accepting payment; if you're missing a requirement such as SR-22 proof of insurance or a court clearance, License Express will block the transaction and tell you what's missing.

Mail payments go to the Washington State Department of Licensing, PO Box 9030, Olympia WA 98507-9030. Processing takes five to seven business days from the date the DOL receives your payment. Do not send cash; the DOL will not process cash payments sent by mail and will return your envelope unopened.

In-person payments at any Washington driver licensing office process the same day. Bring your driver license or ID, proof of insurance if SR-22 filing is required, and payment by check, money order, debit card, or credit card. Cash is accepted at licensing offices but not by mail. The office staff will verify your eligibility, process your payment, and update your record before you leave. If you're missing a document, they'll tell you on the spot rather than processing an incomplete reinstatement that the DOL later reverses.

What You Need Before You Pay

The DOL will not process your reinstatement fee until every suspension requirement is cleared. Paying early doesn't reserve your spot or speed up the timeline.

SR-22 proof of insurance must be on file with the DOL before you pay the reinstatement fee. If your suspension was triggered by a DUI, an at-fault accident without insurance, or accumulating too many violations, your carrier files the SR-22 electronically and the DOL receives it within 24 hours. The DOL's online record will show "SR-22 Required" under your license status; once the filing appears, that line changes to "SR-22 on File." You cannot pay the reinstatement fee until that status updates. Paying before the SR-22 is filed results in a rejected transaction online or a returned check by mail.

Court clearances and program completions must appear on your DOL record before the reinstatement fee is accepted. If your suspension included a court order — alcohol treatment, a defensive driving course, community service hours, or restitution payments — the court sends a clearance notice to the DOL electronically. That clearance takes two to five business days to post. Check your DOL record online or call the DOL customer service line at 360-902-3900 to confirm every requirement shows as complete before you submit payment. The DOL will not process partial reinstatements; every box must be checked.

License Express Catches Eligibility Errors Before You Pay

License Express is the fastest channel because it validates your eligibility in real time. Log in with your driver license number and Social Security number; the system pulls your current suspension status and lists every outstanding requirement. If your SR-22 filing hasn't posted yet, License Express will display "SR-22 Required — Not on File" and block the payment screen. If a court clearance is missing, the system names the specific case number and the issuing court.

The DOL updates License Express records every business day at 6:00 AM Pacific. If your SR-22 was filed yesterday afternoon, it may not appear in License Express until tomorrow morning. Check the system after 6:00 AM; if the SR-22 still doesn't show, call your insurance carrier to confirm the filing was transmitted. Carriers file electronically through the DOL's system, but transmission errors happen. Your carrier can resend the SR-22 within minutes if the first attempt failed.

You receive a confirmation email with a receipt and a reinstatement date. Print that email; some employers and insurance carriers ask for proof of reinstatement, and the confirmation serves as temporary documentation until your new license arrives by mail. Your physical license will not show the reinstatement; the DOL's electronic record is the authoritative source.

WA Uninsured Motorist Rate

19.1%

Nearly one in five Washington drivers operates without insurance. The DOL requires SR-22 proof of financial responsibility after certain violations to reduce that rate and ensure high-risk drivers maintain continuous coverage.

Mail and In-Person Payments Process Without Real-Time Validation

Mailed payments and in-person payments do not validate eligibility before processing. If you mail a check before your SR-22 is on file, the DOL will deposit your check and then reverse the reinstatement when the missing requirement is discovered during manual review. That adds five to ten business days to your timeline.

In-person payments at a licensing office offer the same-day advantage of immediate validation. The office staff checks your DOL record on screen, confirms every requirement is cleared, and processes your payment while you wait. If something is missing, they tell you before accepting payment. Bring your SR-22 confirmation email or a copy of your insurance card showing the SR-22 endorsement; the staff can verify the filing electronically, but having your own proof speeds up the process and catches filing errors before they delay reinstatement.

What Happens After You Pay

The DOL updates your driving record within one business day for License Express payments, three to five business days for in-person payments, and five to seven business days for mailed payments. Your license status changes from "Suspended" to "Valid," and you are legally allowed to drive as soon as that status updates. You do not need to wait for a new physical license card; Washington does not reissue your license after reinstatement unless your card was physically surrendered or expired during the suspension period.

Your insurance carrier will be notified electronically when your license is reinstated. If you're required to maintain SR-22 filing for three years — the standard period for DUI and at-fault-accident suspensions — your carrier continues filing quarterly updates with the DOL. Missing a premium payment during that three-year period triggers an automatic SR-22 lapse notice to the DOL, and your license is suspended again within ten days.
